Day 3, 13Nov 2009

...13.09 miles from Waimanalo to Kahalu`u United Methodist Church...

The nightly ritual of 8 using the Evans bus with everyone else scrambling for floor space kept us all under some kind of a roof...that didn't leak last night either. Thank God Weinberg Village had some room for us. I felt sorry for the residents of Waimanalo though as it seemed the rush hour traffic on the two-lane 'main' street lasted for hours in their otherwise quaint little rural village. It gave me new empathy for "Waimanalo Blue."

Somebody tell me who catered breakfast?

We gathered under still threatening skys...[Day_03.01]

...Utu leads the morning rally as we prepare to depart.[Day_03.02]

Give Mac a robe and have him hold his arms out toward the Red sea and Charlton Heston would have met his match.[Day_03.03]

His back pack is older than most of the walkers. He says he *made* it...somewhere back in the '60's.[Day_03.04]

Almost 23 miles done in two days...107 left to go. Let's go![Day_03.05-09]

Having the choice to either drive away from the front door or sail away from the back door is an enchanting choice in Enchanted Lake.
[Day_03.10]

But it's on to...[Day_03.11-13]

...Castle Hospital...[Day_03.14-16]

...then left up to Castle Junction...[Day_03.17-19]

...then right on Kam Highway......past the HPU Hawai`i Loa campus...[Day_03.20&21]

............past the H-3 exchange to...[Day_03.22&23]

...lunch at the Kaneohe HPD station.

[Day_03.24]

Samiana, Pat, Arden, and Steve make sandwhiches and other food preparation awaiting the arrival of the walkers. [Day_03.25]

Gene watches for arriving walkers to steer them to the lunch line.[Day_03.26]

Utu and Kenny get a beverage from Kimo's mobile canteen.
[Day_03.27]

Pau lunch...

...bu-u-u-u-r-r-r-r-r-rap!...

...and off to Kahalu`u.

[Day_03.28]

I questioned the motivation of these two cheer leaders...and left them undeterred at their guard posts.

[Day_03.29]

Miles...and miles...and miles...

[Day_03.30]

We get to Kahalu`u UMC and like several other days during this marathon...we had to kill an hour or so before we could access the property. So we're across and down the street on the edge of the Kahalu'u Community Park when...

...suddenly...there...on the horizon...
...and I screamed, "Boys, move it! Now!"
[Day_03.31]
Left to right down front...that's Mike, Kaui, and...

...a local girl I hope to find out the name of eventually...

Standing behind those 3, left to right, are Gene, Tom, and Keith...
...with Gary standing just behind Ivan's shoulder...
..and finally Kenny then Pete.

A cloud could have taken this shot away
in the wisp of a spurious breeze...but I got it!

[Day_03.32-34]

  1. Wow.. The rainbow shot is really a stroke. Between the rainbow and Mac and his '60s backpack, it shows that any journey has the makings of an adventure. Bro James in WA

  2. That rainbow shot qualifies as a miracle capture. Seeing it was one thing. Capturing it was...

Concerning Mac, I talked to him later and I don't know if he's simply a good story teller but......he told me he went to the same school as Heston and that fellow students thought that at least, they must be brothers...

Hey, I just write what I hear...and then make up the rest.

  3. 14 November:
Actually, Day 3 ended with a team effort as St. John's By the Sea provided us access to showers and dinner while the Kahalu`u UMC gave us the floor space to sleep...but the problem for me was the lack of signal access to the ether which meant that I was unable to document this day's effort last night in Kahalu`u when it was so freshly accomplished.

I'm entering this little 'book mark' at the end of Day 4 in the event I can actually come back here and write the story. I got lots of pix to inspire the writing so I hope I get the chance. Meanwhile, the signal at Hau`ula is momentarily allowing me to publish so......I'll skip forward to Day 4 while its fresh...provided the signal access holds steady.

BTW...current local weather reports have heavy rain showing up on Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island in the last several days and those immediately to follow. We have been under thunderstorm/heavy rain warnings, not watches, on this island all day today but actually have taken less than a half hour of some heavy drizzle on this days leg walking on the windward side of O`ahu.

Also, the window for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the 3 most historically significant surf contests in all of professional surfing, popped open 2 days ago(12 November) so we could be walking by while surfers compete in the next couple days as we spend tomorrow night in Waimea overlooking the "Bonzai Pipeline" break at the Bay, and the next night at Mokuleia.

Weather wise, though, it promises to be a challenging exercise for us in the next few days if a worsening weather case scenario transpires...
    25 November:
Finally, 11 days later, the book mark gets expanded. The threat of inclement weather was palpable...but we were spared. The first days of the window for the OP Pro presented small waves so our passing was less impeded by the increased vehicular traffic that a day of surfers competing in elimination heats would have brought. Two pluses that kept us safer as we walked through to Kahalu`u and Hau`ula those two days...and especially on to Waimea and Mokuleia on the following WtT Days 5 & 6.

...lemme look at the 53 pix I took on Day 3 and throw a few atchya.

  4. 29 January 2011:
Ran into Mike this past week. He shows up several times during this 2009 walk...but a year later, my only memory of him was meeting him on this walk...and had effectively forgotten him.

Digging these shots out of the 2009 archive effectively resurrected the memory...and sent me on my first comment in a year...after I edited the post, updating the rainbow shot that he is a part of.

btw...it's been a full 2 months+ since thee 2010 walk ended and I'm almost ready to finally bring it up to date with replacing all the bookmark posts with a comprehensive rendering....hopefully in the next week or so.
